The Symphony's Concerts for Young Audiences is one of the cornerstones of the institution's educational performance programming. The semi-annual school-day educational concerts for more than 2,000 elementary and middle school students have been nationally recognized for their innovation and excellence.

Well in advance of the concerts, teachers guides are sent out to all participating schools as to prepare the students for the performance. The Fall Concert for Young Audiences are generally designed for students in 6th grade. In 2008 we created our Winter Concert for Young Audiences geared towards 4th graders.

Concerts are open to all public and private educational institutions, as well as home-school groups of 20 or more.

Ensembles in the Schools

Each year the Symphony presents more than 40 free Ensembles-in-the-Schools Programs for more than 6,000 school children. In these 45-minute "informances," professional musicians from the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra introduce students to classical music, a variety of instruments, and to musical concepts which illuminate learning objectives in elementary school core curriculum. In 2008-2009, the ensembles will include a woodwind quintet and brass quartet.
